Positioning Howard University for the Future: Enriching Humanity through Teaching, Learning, Research and Service

January 10, 2011

Dear Howard University Community:

Welcome to a new semester and a new year! Like you, I am grateful for the opportunities that the holiday provided us to reconnect with our loved ones. It was a meaningful time for me and I hope it was the same for you. Now that school is back in session, I am looking forward to working with you in what promises to be a productive year.

The excitement and energy of 2010 reminded us that Howard University is the place to be! Local, national and world leaders in politics, education, the sciences and social sciences, the arts and humanities, communication, business and the professions visited our campus. Both seasoned and emerging scholars did commendable research. Students like sophomore biology major Billal Sikandar performed admirably. Billal was selected from more than 3,000 applicants nationwide to become a research assistant to renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson. Indeed, our University was alive with activity.
In my address to the University community on September 14, 2010, I expressed thanks for the tremendous amount of time and energy that has been devoted to the work of academic renewal over the past year.

In the fall, we were ranked among the top 10 producers of African-American doctoral graduates in the natural sciences and engineering disciplines; we hosted an international conference on HIV stigma; and, led by WHUR-FM, we raised more than $90,000 to feed the hungry in the Washington Metropolitan area.

Then, in December, Howard students demonstrated service and leadership once again around the globe. Members of Engineers Without Borders returned to Kenya to design a water solution for a rural village and 13 Howard University MBA students visited Dubai and India as part of a global education initiative led by Dean Barron Harvey. All of these efforts are in keeping with our vision and commitment to broaden and deepen our international footprint and to support academic offerings that are truly global in scope.

Our quest for academic excellence continues in all our schools and colleges. The University’s annual report chronicled many of our achievements between July 1, 2009 and June 30, 2010. I urge you to take a look at the full document through the following link: http://www.howard.edu/president/AnnualReport2010.htm.

Among our alumni, Kamala Harris, (B.A. '86), was sworn in as the first woman as well as first African-American and Indian-American, to be elected as California Attorney General. In 2006, the University awarded her the Outstanding Alumni Award for her work in the fields of law and public service. Among our faculty, students and alumni, the Howard tradition of excellence continues to hold true.

We worked very hard and made many tough decisions last year to ensure Howard University’s viability. We will move forward this year to achieve greater heights in academics, leadership and service.

Working together, last year, we completed a thorough review of our academic programs. This would not have been possible without broad campus support among faculty, students, staff, alumni and several external stakeholders. I am deeply grateful for the energy and insight you contributed individually and collectively. The process continues as we strengthen and enhance our great University.

In this new calendar year, we will begin implementing some of our plans. There is much work to do and I look forward to the journey ahead.

Best wishes for a prosperous new year.

Sincerely,

Sidney A. Ribeau
President
