Letter to the Howard University Community

July 25, 2011

Dear Howard University Community:

On an ongoing basis, I have kept the University informed about the progress of the various renewal efforts taking place here at Howard. Decisions being made are helping us restructure and align University resources and personnel with our academic priorities, respond to the nation’s economic downturn and secure the University’s long-term fiscal stability. As I mentioned in my July 5, 2011 letter to the University Community, “Some administrative and staff positions will be eliminated, combined and transformed to avoid duplication, to increase efficiency and to reduce costs in administrative services.”

It is with a somber heart that we are eliminating positions — some of which will involve loss of employees who have given years of service to the University. Many affected employees will be notified this week.

We are committed to making the transition from Howard University as smooth as possible for employees currently in positions that are being eliminated. To support those affected employees, we have arranged for them to receive four weeks of pay, extended benefits, applicable severance pay and the services of a Career Transition Center  offering robust transition and outplacement services.

Please be supportive and encouraging of each other during these difficult times.

Sincerely,

Sidney A. Ribeau
President
