Dear Howard University Community:

Mark Edward Mack

Today, we celebrate the life of Mark Edward Mack (B.A. ’86), beloved professor of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, who passed away Saturday, May 12, after a tragic car accident. On behalf of the Howard University community, I extend sincere condolences to his family.

Mr. Mack was a son of Howard University; having received his bachelor’s in Anthropology, he returned to join the faculty in 1993. He earned his M.A. from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Beyond being an avid scholar and revered expert in his field, Mr. Mack was an exceptional teacher who inspired many of his students to pursue careers in Anthropology.

He served as curator of the W. Montague Cobb Biological Anthropology Laboratory at Howard University, which houses the New York African Burial Ground data, and the W. Montague Cobb skeletal collection. He also served as the Osteological Supervisor for the Foley Square New York African Burial Ground Project (1992). Mr. Mack’s most recent project was the Archaeological Survey of the Walter C. Pierce Community Park, located in Adams Morgan, one of Washington DC’s most diverse neighborhoods.

His countless sacrifices and contributions will forever resonate at Howard and among those in the Anthropology community. He was a true ambassador of our University and we extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends.

Sincerely,

Sidney A. Ribeau
President
