New Student & Employee Orientation

The Department of Public Safety works in partnership with the University community to enhance the safety and quality of life for students, faculty, staff, and visitors through effective law enforcement and proactive crime prevention efforts. Below are some of the services we offer to help provide a safe and secure environment.

Engraving

This complimentary service is for students, staff and faculty to personally engrave their valuables so that they can be identified in the event of theft. Contact our Crime Prevention Specialist, Joyce Brooks at (202) 806-1194 to schedule an appointment to bring your valuables to the Service Center, 2244 10th Street N.W., Room 262. If your valuables are too heavy to bring in, arrangements can be made to come to your location. The information is confidentially kept on file by the Dept. of Public Safety.

Fingerprinting

This free service is for students, staff and faculty who require this service for any reason. You can contact Investigations at (202) 806-1084. He is located in the Service Center, 2244 10th Street N.W., Room 262.

Vehicle Anti-Theft Club" Program

The Department of Public Safety, in an effort to educate the campus community on automobile safety, offers all students, staff and faculty the opportunity to purchase an automobile "club". The "club" is a deterrent in auto thefts and theft from autos. Statistics show that thieves do not take the time to steal autos that have a visible "club" on their steering wheels. The "club" is being offered at the low cost of $20.00 and orders can be placed with Joyce Brooks @202-806-1194.

Escort Service

This service is provided to students, staff and faculty when they have to travel alone on campus in isolated areas after dark, where there is low activity, or anytime a request is made when there is a concern for personal safety. Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) Program

This Rape Aggression Defense system is a program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques FOR WOMEN ONLY. These FREE classes are taught by certified RAD instructors (HU Dept. of Public Safety Officers). This system is a comprehensive six week course that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and risk avoidance, while progressing on to the hands-on defense training.

HU Guardian Service

Turn your cell phone into your own personal safety device. The Guardian Service is free to all students, staff and faculty. Have peace of mind while travelling on or off campus. Be connected and in the loop with everything that is going on at Howard University while you are here on campus. Blue Light Emergency Phones

For campus safety, Emergency Blue Light phones are strategically located across the university's various campuses. By pressing the red button on these units, users can communicate directly with our Security Operations Communications Center. The location of the station is digitally displayed to the communications officer who will immediately dispatch an officer to assist.
