Extreme Makeover: Burr Gymnasium
Burr Gymnasium, home of the Howard University Bison, is named in honor of John Harold Burr Jr., chairman of the physical education department at the University from 1923-1958. Mr. Burr rose to prominence as a pioneer in Black participation in the sport of soccer and contributed to Howard's dominance in HBCU championships during the 1950s.
Now undergoing an "Extreme Makeover" as part of Facilities Renewal, CHA Sports is the specialized project architect for the Burr renovation. The new interiors have been designed by V*Starr Interiors, Venus Williams’ design firm.
The team locker rooms and student locker rooms at Burr are being completely renovated to create an environment worthy of the Division I, Howard Bison. The three classrooms at Burr, as well as the restrooms are also being extensively renovated. The gym’s façade is getting a facelift, and like many of the renovations underway on campus, unseen features such as mechanicals, electrical and plumbing will all be upgraded as well. In addition, changes at Burr include upgrades for full compliance with the American Disabilities Act to make the building accessible to all. There are also significant upgrades to the environmental health and safety systems.
