To raise awareness about the “Students First Campaign,” an initiative launched by President Sidney A. Ribeau in January 2009 to enhance the student experience and create a student-centered environment that is supportive of students, faculty, and staff, schools and colleges. The daylong planning session will engage students, faculty, and staff in discussions of issues related to the continued implementation of the Students First Initiative in their respective academic units.
The Students First Campaign (SFC) is a multi-phased initiative designed to: (1) sustain a Student-centered learning environment, (2) provide a framework for continuous quality improvement, and (3) cultivate a culture where the student is valued as one of our most important resources. A.C.T. Now! The Student First Campaign in the School of Education
The theme of the Students First Campaign (SFC) in the Howard University School of Education is A.C.T. Now! Achievement, Communication, and Technology. The theme, selected by HUSOE student government leaders, asserts that student achievement can be accelerated through better communication networks and technology access. Join School of Education students, faculty, and administrators in a series of roundtable discussions devoted to responding to student-identified concerns. HUSOE student government leaders will lead roundtable discussions, disseminate the HUSOE ACT Now! Survey of Student Needs and report of findings from this initial inquiry to the HUSOE community. Student leaders will also present information about membership in the HUSOE-charter education honor societies and student government associations. Lunch will be served.

William H. Cosby, Jr. & Camille O. Hanks Cosby Lecture
The Cosby Fellowship was first awarded during the 1990 – 1991 academic year and is designed to support study in the Master of Social Work degree program. The fellowship is open to an outstanding second year student engaged in cutting edge and innovative social work practice. Eighteen students have been the recipient of this prestigious award. All of the Cosby Fellowship alum have been invited to attend the annual student lecture.
Then 2008-2009 Cosby Fellowship recipient and lecturer is Ms. Saundre Allen from Oakland, California. He research is on women in college and campus violence.

“Change” in the 21st Century
A Roundtable: Phi Beta Kappa members will share their reflections on how they hope to change and shape the future during the twenty-first century. Fortified with the knowledge gained from four years of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary studies in the Humanities, Social Sciences and Natural Sciences at Howard University, these graduating seniors are selecting advanced studies and entering careers through which they hope to chart new directions and guide progress for the nation and the global community. What are their most profound concerns and how will they engage them? Where will their imaginations take them? How do they envisage the future? Philosphia Bίou Kybernétes, “Love of learning is the guide of life,” the association’s motto, is the foundation for their expansive imaginations and dreams for the future.

Dr. Paula Ribeau will lead a conversation with the Honorable Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, the President of the Republic of Liberia. The program will feature a thoughtful discussion of her current book: “This Child Will Be Great: Memoir of a Remarkable Life by Africa’s First Woman President” HarperCollins, 2009. Often referred to as the “Iron Lady,” the Honorable President Johnson-Sirleaf will share her personal story of triumph and leadership that will inspire women everywhere of their potential to change the world.

The Change Agents panel will highlight three HUSOE alumni--Ms. Angela Simms, the2007 Washington Post Foundation Teacher of the Year for the states of Maryland and Virginia, and the District of Columbia; Mr. Wayne Ryan, National Principal of the Year; and, Dr. Faye Brown, a researcher at the Yale Child Study Center. Alumni will discuss their current work and strategies for success in the worlds of education practice, policy advocacy, and human service delivery. A reception for students, alumni, and faculty will follow the panel discussion.
