Director
Ambassador Dawson is the founding
director of the Ralph
J.
Bunche
International
Affairs
Center
, which grew out of an international affairs program
established at Howard in 1991 on a $3 million grant from the
W.K. Kellogg Foundation for which
Dawson
wrote. This was on
the initial proposal. He
was named acting director (1992) of the program and then
Director in August 1997. One year earlier, in 1996, the
international affairs program and center were re-christened to
honor Dr. Ralph Johnson Bunche.
Dawson
has been at Howard since 1989 when he joined the faculty of
the
School
of
Communications
. In 1990, he became Director of the Patricia Roberts Harris
Public Affairs Program, a position he still holds.
From 1962 to 1989, Dr. Dawson, a former
professor of English, was a member of the U.S. Foreign
Service, during which time he served as Cultural Affairs
Officer or Public Affairs Officer in such countries as
Uganda
,
Nigeria
,
Liberia
and the
Philippines
. In 1979, President Jimmy Carter appointed him Ambassador to
the
Republic
of
Botswana
, where he remained until 1983.
Amb.
Dawson
also held several posts at the State Department and in
the U.S. Information Agency's
Washington
headquarters and received the Agency's Superior
Service Honor Award on three occasions. He holds a Ph.D. from
the
University
of
Iowa
, a master's degree from
Columbia
University
, and a bachelor's degree from
Lincoln
University
(
Pa.
), which also awarded him an honorary doctorate in
1990.
