About Our Clinic
Effective communication is a vital component to a fulfilling
life. At Howard University’s Speech & Hearing Clinic,
clients receive diagnosis and treatment for all types of
communication disorders and dissimilarities.
The Howard University Speech and Hearing Clinic has a
reputation for excellence throughout the Washington
Metropolitan area. People of all ethnicities and ages can
receive speech and hearing screenings, diagnostic
assessments and treatment.
About Our Staff
The Clinic is an integral part of Howard University’s
Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders.
Our primary mission is to prepare graduate students to
assume professional roles in Speech-Language Pathology
and/or Audiology in a variety of occupational settings.
Graduate students work with clients under the direct
supervision of professional staff. All faculty members are
certified in Clinical Competence by the American Speech-
Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).
Speech-Language Pathology Services
The Clinic offers assessments and treatment in the following
areas:
- Articulation/Speech
- Auditory Processing
- Emerging Language
- Fluency/Stuttering
- Language and Literacy
- Oral Motor
- Phonemic Awareness
- Voice
Our clinicians also provide assessment and treatment in
communication disorders and/or differences associated with
the following:
- Apraxia/Aphasia/Dysarthria
- Autism/PDD
- Brain Injury
- Cleft Lip and Palate
- Developmental Delay
- Dialect (Regional and Foreign)
- Laryngectomy
Audiology Services
- Assistive Listening and Alerting Devices
- Aural Rehabilitation (Coping with hearing loss)
- Central Auditory Processing Assessments
- Community Education Program
- Hearing Aid Evaluation and Dispensing
- Hearing Evaluations
- Programmable Hearing Aids
- Digital Hearing Aids
- Early Intervention Hearing Assessments
The Clinic is a hearing healthcare provider for the following
programs:
- The Early Assessment and Intervention Program for
the District of Columbia
- HEAR NOW a hearing aid assistance program
A hearing aid loaner bank for the District is housed
in the Clinic.
Other Services
Our staff and students conduct speech, language and hearing
screenings throughout the community, and provide
education about communication disorders to preschools,
parent groups, senior citizen centers, and other community
groups.
Appointments
Office hours for HU’s Speech & Hearing Clinic are from
8:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Spanish
appointments can be arranged during the week. Please call
202-806-6991 (Main Office/Voice Mail) to schedule an
appointment. Persons with disabilities who need assistance
with scheduling or parking are encouraged to call the clinic
office for special arrangements.
Fees and Insurance
A current fee schedule is available upon request.
Clinical services are available at reasonable rates. A sliding
fee scale is also available for those who qualify. University
employees and students are serviced at no charge.

How to Find Us
The Clinic is located on the Southeastern section of the
Howard University campus, inside of the School of
Communications C.B. Powell Building, on the first floor.
We can be reached most easily from the 4th and Bryant
Streets entrance.
