UNDERGRADUATE COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

COMC 101. Principles of Speech. 3 crs. Development of effective oral skills in a variety of speech situations, familiarizing students with communication processes and their effect on human interactions.

COMC 102.Introduction to Communication. 3 crs. Survey of the field of communication and its significance and impact on contemporary society.

COMC 108. Communication Law. 3 crs. Treats legal aspects of the media with emphasis on libel, copyright, and FCC laws in advertising and retailing. Prerequisite: COMC 102 and Sophomore classification.

COMC 202. Communication Theory. 3 crs. Survey of historical and contemporary theories of the communication process. Prerequisite: COMC 102 and Sophomore standing.

COMC 205. Mock Trial. 3 crs . Participatory investigation in competitive mock trial, with advanced strategies and techniques. Prerequisite: COMC 202 or permission of instructor.

COMC 206. Communication Research Methods. 3 crs. Introduction to research methodologies regarding communication problems. Prerequisite: COMC 202

COMC 208. Forensics Practicum: Mock Trial. 1 cr. Only students who are selected for the Mock Trial competitive team may enroll in this course. COMC 204 or permission of instructor.

COMC 209. Forensics Practicum: Individual Events. 1 cr. Only students who are selected for the Individual Events competitive speech team may enroll in this practicum.

COMC 213. Elements of Persuasion. 3 crs. Theoretical and practical study of persuasive processes emphasizing techniques in interpersonal, small group, organizational, intercultural and mass communications. Prerequisite: COMC 202

COMC 242. Language Issues in Communication. 3 crs. Examines communication dynamics in relation to language as a framer and molder of message content. Prerequisite: COMC 202

COMC 307. Inter/lntrapersonal Communication. 3 crs. In depth analysis of selected theories, contemporary research review, and participatory analysis of communication behavior. Prerequisite: COMC 202

COMC 309. African American Communication. 3 crs. Discusses traditional and contemporary African American communication styles and strategies. Prerequisite: COMC 213

COMC 320. Organizational Communication. 3 cr. The study of organizational communication as it occurs at the structural, small group, interpersonal, and written levels. Prerequisite: COMC 213 

COMC 400. Practicum: Communication and Culture. 3 crs. Consists of supervised practical experience in a field situation. Prerequisite.: COMC 320 and Senior standing.

COMC 408. Introduction to Legal Research. 3 crs . (Formerly called Communication Law 2) Study of research methods in legal communication. Prerequisite: COMC 108, 206 & Junior Standing

COMC 410. Conflict Management & Negotiation Strategies. 3 cr. . (Formerly called Negotiation and Conflict). Legal principles and practice in settling disputes through communication. Prerequisite: COMC 320 and Junior standing

COMC 415. Intercultural/Interracial Communication. 3 crs. Considers the role that culture and race play in human communication. Prerequisite: COMC 307 and Junior Standing

 COMC 463. Directed Study. 3 cr. Selected readings directed toward contemporary concerns in speech communication. Prerequisite: Senior Standing and permission of instructor and department chair.

COMC 471. Advanced Public Speaking. 3 crs. Designed to provide the advanced undergraduate student with specific communication principles and skills necessary for effective public speaking in a variety of speaking occasions. Prerequisite: COMC 320 and Junior standing.
