Earvin “Magic Johnson Pledges $100,000 to the School of Communications’ Campaign for Howard.
Earvin “Magic” Johnson, basketball great and communications’ entrepreneur pledged his support to contribute $100,000 to the School of Communications for its campaign to build a new state-of-the-art Telecommunications Complex during the school’s 30th Anniversary Gala, October 17 at the Ritz Carlton. Flanked by President Patrick L. Swygert, Dean Jannette L. Dates and a dais resplendent with some of the most powerful African-Americans in the communication industry today, Johnson, the honored guest and Messenger Award recipient, spoke of his commitment to support the mission of the School of Communications—to train and prepare African-American students to succeed in today’s diverse and ever changing communications industry.
Mr. Johnson is Founder and CEO of Magic Johnson Enterprises (MJE). He oversees the company’s strategic direction while exploring additional partnership opportunities and new business ventures. Once such business venture is the new Starbucks located in the Howard Center. Opened in October, the store will have its grand opening Friday, November 8 with a special visit by Orin Smith, President Starbucks.
Even though Mr. Johnson is universally known for his illustrious 13 year career in the National Basketball Association (NBA), he has redefined himself as a businessman who focuses his efforts on revitalizing neglected communities by providing quality entertainment and services. In addition to running the company, Johnson frequently speaks to corporations, organizations colleges and universities about his ongoing success and experiences.
An avid believer in philanthropy, Johnson finds time to lend his support to worthy causes. As co-chair for former Vice President Al Gore’s White House Community Empowerment Board, Johnson participated in business roundtables designed to encourage leaders and businesses to invest in neglected neighborhoods. His foundation, the Magic Johnson Foundation, was founded in 1991 shortly after his retirement from the LA Lakers. A non-profit organization that awards monetary grants to other non-profit organizations that work to improve and address the health, educational and social needs of those residing in the inner-city, has raised millions for charity and for these community-based organization
