BROADCAST JOURNALISM

The goal of the Broadcast Journalism sequence is to provide students with the skills they need to succeed as communication professionals in the television and radio industries. The sequence trains 36% of the Journalism Department’s enrollment and continues to grow and mature. Skills are taught within the context of storytelling assignments and include a thorough consideration of journalistic ethics and standards.

Students have access to a state-of-the-art computer lab in a fully digital environment. The computers are equipped with the latest software and each is equipped with CD and DVD drives and burners, DV decks and printers. In addition, students are taught to use the latest broadcast-quality audio and video equipment. Students can have their work aired on WHUT-TV and WHBC-AM.

The Broadcast Journalism sequence provides two full-time faculty members. They maintain close ties with colleagues in the industry and continue to produce professional, journalistic and scholarly work. Graduates from the Broadcast Journalism sequence are employed as visual communication professionals for some of the most prestigious media outlets in the world including ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, CNN, BET and ESPN.

Howard's Journalism Department is accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC). This means that every six years we prepare an exhaustive report on facilities, faculty, students, and curriculum and invite a team from ACEJMC to visit our campus and evaluate our educational program. Of the over-400 radio-TV programs in the United States, only about 108 are accredited. We are proud of our accreditation; it means that we have been measured against a rigorous national standard and judged to be among the best. It also means that students will get an excellent education in Broadcast Journalism at Howard University.
