Dr. Barbara Bealor Hines is professor and director of the graduate program in Mass Communication and Media Studies at Howard University. She joined the faculty at Howard in 1984 and has served as chair of the Department of Journalism and director of the Annenberg Honors Program. She specializes in courses in writing and editing, public relations, publication design and editing. She serves as coordinator of the journalism internship program.
Dr. Hines has a long career in journalism education. A former high school newspaper adviser, she pioneered a course for high school students in school public relations in 1970, the first to be certified nationally by a state Department of Education. She was assistant dean of the College of Journalism at the University of Maryland and executive director of the Maryland Scholastic Press Association.
She is vice president of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) and becomes president of that organization in 2008 and serves on the Executive Committee of the Society for News Design (SND).
Dr. Hines served nine years on the Accrediting Council for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (ACEJMC) and is active consulting in the U.S. with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and internationally on academic programs in journalism and mass communication. A former member of the National Commission on Public Relations Education, she was named the Educator of the Year by the Public Relations Society of America in 1999 and is a member of the National Capital Chapter of PRSAs Hall of Fame.
Dr. Hines received the Robert Knight Award from the Scholastic Journalism division of AEJMC, the “Our Voices” Award from the Public Relations Society of America, the Reid Montgomery Award from College Media Advisers, the Pioneer Award from the National Scholastic Press Association, the Gold Key from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, the Medal of Merit from the Journalism Education Association, the School Bell Award from the Maryland State Teachers Association, the President’s Award from the Society of Newspaper Design and twice was named one of the ten best high school journalism teachers in the U.S. by the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund.
She is the former vice president of Impressions Network: Media Consulting Worldwide and a former press secretary to a U.S. senator. She has written, edited or contributed to more than 40 articles, books, newsletters and monographs.
She is a Certified Journalism Educator (CJE).
Dr. Hines received her Ph.D. from the University of Maryland, master’s degree from the American University and bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at Austin.
