NEWS, EDITORIAL/PRINT
The world is your beat at Howard University. As a student in the
nation's capital, you can cover news at The White House, on Capitol Hill
and in the diverse neighborhoods that enrich the metropolitan Washington
area. You can report on stories in Africa, Europe, the Middle East and
the Caribbean. And on any given day, a world figure, a presidential
candidate, a leading theologian or a popular entertainer will make news
right here on campus. The News-Editorial Sequence in the Department of
Journalism will prepare you to cover all of this and much, much more.
Our internationally acclaimed faculty members are dedicated to providing
the best in hands-on learning, time-tested theory, and cutting-edge
techniques in news gathering and dissemination. We have assembled some
of the best minds in journalism-not only on our faculty but also in
concert with visiting professionals from leading newspapers, magazines
and Internet sites. At Howard, you'll learn how to cover stories
accurately and fairly with the highest standards of professionalism and
ethics. You'll sharpen your critical thinking and research skills.
You'll be challenged to do and be your best.
Whether you want to be a reporter, graphic designer, editor, media
executive or entrepreneur, Howard is the place for you. Expect a smooth
transition from the classroom to the newsroom as you learn to tell
stories across multimedia platforms. You can gain invaluable experience
by working for BlackCollegeView.com in our Converged Media Lab, which is
operated in partnership with the National Newspaper Publishers
Association. You can also submit stories to the NNPA's national news
service, which is based in the lab. In addition, Howard has two
newspapers, The Hilltop and The District Chronicles, not to mention the
publications that maintain offices in Washington.
That's just one reason why employers depend upon Howard as a leading
source of talented journalists. Our students produce award-winning work
that has helped them land internships and full-time employment at such
places as The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, The New York
Times, USA Today, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Washington Informer,
The Orlando Sentinel, The Atlanta Daily World, Detroit Free Press,
Ebony, Fortune, Essence, Teen People, Vibe, ESPN, Upscale,
WashingtonPost.com, BET.com and Discovery.com. Once on the job, Howard
graduates have gone on to win Pulitzer Prizes, Nieman Fellowships and
awards from the National Association of Black Journalists as well as the
Society of Professional Journalists.
