Founded in 2006 through a grant from Carnegie Corporation of New York, the Preparing Future Journalism Faculty Program (PFJFP) was established to increase the quality and diversity of journalism educators who will take faculty positions in journalism schools throughout the United States.

Theory and Practice

Housed within the interdisciplinary Mass Communication and Media Studies Program of Howard University’s Graduate School and supported by the John H. Johnson School of Communications, the program will train future journalism faculty members through a curriculum that emphasizes practical experience alongside theory.

Specialization

J-Faculty participants will complete a doctorate in mass communication and media studies, with an emphasis in a specialized area outside of communications in conjunction with 36 graduate programs at the University. Under the leadership of distinguished scholars at the university and visiting professors and industry professionals, the participants will complete research and creative projects within their specializations.

Industry Expertise

Participants also will complete graduate industry internships, obtain industry mentors, and teach undergraduate laboratory courses – the sites for the creation of news content for The Hilltop (Howard’s daily student newspaper), “NewsVision” and “Howard Today” (television news programs), and District Chronicles (the school’s weekly community-focused instructional newspaper).

Faculty Preparation

Through courses, workshops, activities, mentoring and hands-on instruction, J-Faculty will participate in the Graduate School Preparing Future Faculty Program and may complete the Graduate Certificate in College and University Faculty Preparation to gain knowledge of pedagogy and learning theory, awareness of issues challenging contemporary higher education, skill in course delivery and assessment of student progress.
