Curriculum Overview
Program Goal
To increase the quality and diversity of journalism educators who will take faculty positions in journalism schools throughout the United States.
Program Objectives
- To improve the professional and academic network of future journalism faculty
- To instill knowledge of theories in mass communications and media studies as it applies to practical journalism experiences
- To develop a competency in a research specialization area outside of communications (such as business/entrepreneurship, international affairs, health) that would lead to the journalism industry improving its coverage and its operations
- To provide intensive training and experiences to enhance participants’ preparation for the journalism professoriate
- To embrace diverse approaches to the study of media and society
- To imbue a critical frame of mind and a sense of obligation to act as leaders in a global sense to promote balance and understanding of the mutual relationship between culture and media
- To encourage a commitment to social justice with a special interest in underrepresented groups
University PFF Requirements
- Attend all PFF general body meetings.
- Complete the “Faculty Roles and Responsibilities” course during their first year in the program.
- Attend the two-day TA workshop during the fall semester.
- Participate in one site visit to a partner institution per year.
- Attend two PFF-sponsored career preparation seminars/workshops per semester.
- Meet with faculty mentor each semester
- Create a teaching/academic portfolio with the guidance of the PFF program and their faculty mentor.
- Complete an evaluated teaching experience.
J-Faculty Requirements
- Complete course: “Issues in Journalism and Mass Communication Education”
- Correspond each semester with industry mentor.
- Complete one professional internship and a related research project or paper
- Attend the J-Faculty lecture and professional development series.
- Join a professional journalism organization that’s a member of Council of National Journalism Organizations, CNJO.
- Volunteer at a professional journalism conference reflecting media specialization
- Participate in one academic journalism conference
- Monitor the discipline and share findings
