J-Faculty Distinguished Lecture Series 

Each semester, distinguished scholars and professionals will be invited to give guest lectures about the future of journalism, industry trends, their vision for the journalism industry and their expectations of future educators, scholars and journalists. They will share their expertise with Howard University students and faculty from journalism and other disciplines. Scholars from mass communication and media studies as well as disciplines like Economics, International Affairs, Computer Technology, Political Science, Law, Women’s Studies, and Divinity will be invited. The lectures are digitally recorded so that they can be edited for streaming on the J-Faculty website.

The Spring 2007 Distinguished Lecturers were:

  • Alberto Ibargüen, President, John S. and James L. Knight Foundation
  • Nick Charles, Editor in Chief, AOL Black Voices
  • Howard Weaver, Vice President, News, The McClatchy Company

During the 2007-2008 academic year, equal number of scholars and professionals will be represented. Guest lecturers will cover such topics as:

  • International Reporting
  • Business Reporting
  • Community/Citizen Journalism
  • New Media
  • Media Ownership

Special J-Faculty Seminars/Workshops

These non-credit one-day or half-day seminars will be offered on a periodic basis to students and faculty to improve their skills outside of the traditional classroom. Professionals from outside of the university will be invited to present. Some proposed topics include:

  • Visual Journalism Using Digital Equipment
  • Audio Editing
  • Video Editing
  • Computer Assisted Reporting
  • Web Design
  • Podcasts
  • Blogs
  • AP Style
  • Industry Trends
