Flip Wilson Scholarship Essay

Question:
What risks, hurdles or obstacles did Flip Wilson face which parallel your own or others’ entry into the journalism/mass communication workforce?

Response:

We all have aspirations. Some of us take steps to see that they are fulfilled. Few of us have the dedication it takes to make our dreams come true. In his journey through a life of poverty, abuse and abandonment to one of fame, fortune and professional success, Clerow "Flip" Wilson epitomizes the idea of an individual taking adversity and turning it into opportunity. Instead of allowing obstacles he faced to curtail his dreams of success, Wilson used them to later become an actor, comedian, writer and philanthropist.

Although his ambitious attitude and witty nature played a pivotal role, it was not these characteristics alone that earned him the title of "TV's First Black Superstar." Flip's legacy lives on because he found the key to unlock the door to success: preparation.

My experience at Howard University's School of Communications has taught me many valuable lessons but the most important I've learned are to train hard and never jeopardize my integrity for success. Gaining experience in my field by taking advantage of every opportunity for professional growth is vital. Longevity in this industry is found by those with a desire to learn and perfect their craft. As the pioneer once stated, "You can't expect to hit the jackpot if you don't put a few nickels in the machine."

As I embark upon my career as a journalist and author, maintaining a clear vision of my values and beliefs will not be an easy task. Like Flip Wilson, I will welcome all obstacles with a level-head and open-mind. I will not fold in the face of opposition but rather stand taller, work harder and think further. Maya Angelou captures the essence of Flip Wilson's and my own outlook on life perfectly in one of her many inspirational quotes:

I can be changed by what happens to me. I refuse to be reduced by it”
