WHBC 830 AM
WHBC 30th Anniversary Reunion
Greetings All,
I would first like to welcome everyone to the Mecca also known as Howard University! I am Jessica Sturgis, the current General Manager of WHBC 830 AM and WHUT-TV’s ResNet Channel 51.
A talented student from the Department of Radio, TV & FILM named Barry Mayo in 1974, started our student operated radio station WHBC 830 AM. THANKS BARRY! He created the opportunity for students to learn how to operate a real radio station first hand.
WHBC has grown from its humble beginnings into a cutting edge college radio station. WHBC is located in the basement of Howard University’s John H. Johnson School of Communications. Howard University’s commercial station, WHUR-FM 96.3; the John H. Johnson School of Communications Department of Radio, TV& FILM; as well as, the professional guidance of our faculty Advisor, Mr. Reggie Miles, support the student run station . WHBC 830AM has added to the renowned Howard University legacy by becoming one of the most advanced college radio stations in the country, and also being the nation's #1 HBCU radio station. According to the Princeton Review, Howard University was ranked #15 in the nation for the best college radio station. We are the only carrier current to obtain this honor.
WHBC operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, broadcasting on Channel 51 of the University’s residential TV network (ResNet). On Channel 51, you can hear great music while watching your favorite on-air personality during their show-times. The next major step for WHBC is streaming online, which is the driving force of the quality of our programming in the upcoming school year.
Since WHBC is a student operated station, we welcome any Howard University student that is dedicated and willing to learn. WHBC provides students with the opportunity to learn the radio profession hands on, as well as networking with professionals in the radio industry. The experience you gain from working at WHBC can be used to transition into your career.
I hope you choose Howard University’s John H. Johnson School of Communication as your college home. And, we here at WHBC are looking forward to meeting you and making you apart of our family!
WHBC, We’ve got it on lock!
