This workshop
is designed to provide the conceptual, procedural and technical
knowledge needed so that participants can use the Final Cut
Pro HD system to learn or improve their non-linear video
editing skills. Participants will become familiar with the
essential terminology, conceptual theories, equipment operation,
and fundamental post-production practices to effectively
edit & EDI
digital video productions.
DAY
1 - VISUAL CONCEPTS, THEORIES AND PRACTICES,
6-10:00pm
Includes discussion and overview of the art of editing. Viewing of pre-cut
editing examples, terminology review, How the Final-Cut Pro System works.
DAY
2 - FINAL CUT PRO: THE SYSTEM & OPERATION,
10:00am-6:00pm
Digitizing images into the system. Manipulating image and sound to tell the
story. Putting elements in place, a step-by-step process.
DAY
3 – EDITING AND THE FINAL OUTCOME,
1-6:00pm
Advanced editing techniques. Special effects concepts, adding bells & whistles
to increase the visual effect.

Teaching methods
include lectures, demonstrations, hands-on production exercises
and editing a 2-5 minute dramatic video project. Informational
handouts, study sheets and edit systems will be provided.
Participants are encouraged – although not required – to
bring their own portable firewire hard drives and personal
laptop computers with Final-Cut Pro installed.
WORKSHOP INSTRUCTOR - S. TORRIANO BERRY
Award winning independent filmmaker, writer and film/television
professor, S. Torriano Berry, created and produced: BLACK INDEPENDENT
SHOWCASE, a series of independent and student films and videos;
THE BLACK BEYOND, an anthology series of horror, science fiction
and supernatural short films and videos from an African-American
perspective; THE LIGHT and WHEN IT'S YOUR TURN - two dramatic
made-for-TV movies for WPVI-TV 6 in Philadelphia, PA; and BLACK
VISIONS/SILVER SCREEN: HOWARD UNIVERSITY STUDENT FILM SHOWCASE
- a 10-part series of student produced films and videos for WHUT-
TV 32, Howard University Television.
He has also
re-edited evangelists James and Eloyce Gist’s
1929 silent film Hellbound Train, which was rediscovered in fragments
in a vault at the Library of Congress. Professor Berry plans
to screening and lecture about this historic work.
Professor
Berry’s first-feature length film, EMBALMER,
is about a deranged mortician who tries to bring his murdered
family back to life. A 30-minute version of this horror film
was a finalist in Showtime Network’s 1998 Black Short Filmmaker's
Showcase. He has directed, photographed and edited numerous video
documentaries and industrial features including Jesus Can Change
Your Life - a half-hour national presentation for Harvest LifeChangers
World Ministries; a promotional video for the DC Employment
Justice Center; a campaign kick-off video for the D.C. Energy
Office, a promotional video for the BESLA 25th anniversary conference,
and numerous personal projects.
In the literary
field, Citadel Press published Professor Berry’s
co-authored film resource book THE 50 MOST INFLUENTIAL BLACK
FILMS in July 2001, and he has traveled extensively conducting
lectures and presentations on the history of Black films in America.
Currently, Professor Berry is completing THE HISTORICAL DICTIONARY
OF AFRICAN AMERICAN CINEMA, scheduled for publication by Scarecrow
Press in 2005. He has also completed two novels; TEARS is based
on his feature-length screenplay exploring the negative and often
tragic effects brought on by racist attitudes in America, and
THE HONEYMAN'S SON, a coming-of-age tale about a young man’s
dreams and aspirations while growing up during the 1940s.
Berry is a tenured faculty member of the Howard University Department
of Radio, Television and Film. He holds a B.A. degree in Art/Photography
from Arizona State University, and a M.F.A. in Motion Picture
