EDUCATIONAL ADVISORY CENTER
Two professional academic advisers serve the undergraduate students of the John H. Johnson School of Communications. Incoming students are assigned alphabetically to one of the two advisers. All seniors are advised by the senior academic adviser, who is also responsible for clearing students for graduation. Note: Graduate students are assigned to faculty advisers in their departments.
Students meet with their advisers as soon as they matriculate in the John H. Johnson School of Communications. Incoming freshmen take basic courses in English composition, mathematics, foreign language, and selected courses in the humanities and social sciences. They receive an orientation about the four departments and the eleven available major concentrations. Incoming transfer students supply an official transcript from their previous university and their adviser recommends courses which can be transferred onto their Howard transcript. Their advisers assist them in making a transition into their selected major concentrations.
The Student Handbook of the John H. Johnson School of Communications is available in print format in the Educational Advisory Center. The part of the Handbook that is relevant to student affairs is called “Academic Affairs.” and it summarizes the rules of the School regarding transfer of credit, grading policy, good academic standing, probation, suspension, graduation requirements, use of the Consortium of Universities, exchange programs, etc.
