General Competitions

Awards for High School Students

  1. Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation - The award: varies. Based on academic merit, leadership and community involvement.
  2. Burger King Scholarship Program - Site open October 15 – December 15th. Deadline: and Mexico residents.
  3. Holocaust Remembrance Project - December 15th. award: up to $5,000. Essay contest. Open to U.S.
  4. Presidential Freedom Scholarships
  5. Gates Millennium Scholars
  6. Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund - The award: varies by semester. Based on merit and demonstrated financial need. NO INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS.
  7. Ron Brown Scholarships - The award: $10,000. Renewable. Academic merit, leadership, community service, all fields. The deadline is usually in January. Very competitive.
  8. Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholarship - The award: $6,000 per year. Renewable. Academic merit, leadership, community service, all fields. Deadline is usually in April.
  9. Project Excellence Scholarships - The award: $4,000 or higher (to full tuition). Academic merit, leadership, community service, all fields. Deadline: February.
  10. National Honor Society (Sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals) - Award amount is $1,000. Scholarship for National Honor Society members in their senior year. Your chapter/school nominates you. The deadline is November.

High School/ College Scholarships

  1. National Alliance for Excellence Scholarships - The award: varying amounts - for a minimum of one year. The student competitors can be high school seniors or already in college. Applications can be submitted at any time.
  2. Arts Recognition and Talent Search Awards - The award: $100 to $3,000. To be used for freshman year in college. These awards are granted to high school or college students (17, 18 years of age). Audition, a portfolio or tape required. Deadline is June 1, or April 1 (for registration in specific regions).
  3. Hispanic College Fund Scholarships - The award: varies. Hispanic students majoring in business -related areas, including communications. Deadline: April.
  4. Historically Black College & University Scholarships - The award: $2,000. Must attend HBCU that is a member of the IES consortium. Travel overseas required. Deadline: November 1st and May 1st.
  5. Ronald McDonald House Charities (and the United Negro College Fund) - The award is from $1,000 to full tuition. Students must be studying at an HBCU that is a member of the UNCF and have at least a B average. It's for sophomores. Deadline is April 1.
  6. Bonner Scholar Scholarships - Award amount: $4,000. Renewable. Community service is pivotal, as well as need. Your college must be a participating college. Deadline varies.
  7. The Roothbert Scholarship Fund - The award: $2,000 -$3,000. Support to person motivated by spiritual values. Essay required. Deadline: February.

Communications Scholarships

  1. Dow Jones Newspaper Fund – In addition to providing its own scholarships for high school students, the site offers links to other communications associations that provide awards. Visit www.djnewspaperfund.dowjones.com
  2. Radio and Television News Directors Foundation - RTNDA and RTNDF honor professional achievements in electronic journalism through numerous prestigious awards, scholarships, fellowships and internship programs. They also provide a communications-specific scholarship database. Visit www.rtndf.org.
  3. National Association of Black Journalists' Student Education Enrichment & Development Programs - The award: $2,500 (non-renewable and $5,000 four–year sustaining). NABJ Membership required ($25). Must be planning to pursue career in journalism. International students OK.
  4. William Randolph Hearst Endowed Scholarship for Minority Students - The award: $2,500 -$5,000. Based on education level, financial need and time commitment. 10-12 week full-time summer internship in Washington DC required. Deadline: March 15.
  5. Kodak Scholarships - The award: varying amounts to $5,000. For those studying in film/cinematography at U.S. colleges.
  6. National Association of Black Journalists - The award: $2,500. 3.0 GPA desirable. Eligible students must be majoring in journalism--print, photography, radio, or television. Article required. Deadline is March 31.
  7. Public Relations Student Society of America - Each year PRSSA and its sponsors give away nearly $20,000 to winners in national scholarship and awards competitions. Visit www.prssa.org
  8. Society of Professional Journalists - Since its founding in 1961, the Sigma Delta Chi Foundation has promoted excellence and ethics in journalism. Visit www.spj.org for specific chapter scholarship information.
  9. Broadcast Education Association - The BEA Two Year Scholarship is for study at schools offering only freshman and sophomore instruction or for study at 4-year institutions by graduates of BEA 2-year programs. All other scholarships are awarded to juniors, seniors and graduate students at BEA Member colleges/universities . Visit www.beaweb.org
  10. The National Press Club – NPC awards annual scholarships for undergraduate and graduate studies in journalism. Visit www.npc.press.org.
