Early Childhood Education

Early Childhood Teacher Certification Program receiving a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Human Development and a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in Early Childhood Education (5-year program, 152 credit hours)

The undergraduate candidate for the baccalaureate degree (128 credit hours) with 30 credits in human development is eligible for the MAT in the 5-year program in early childhood education. Successful adherence to the program scheme is necessary for admittance. Formal application and admission to the graduate school and completion of a minimum of 24 credit hours is required to complete the 5th year.

Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in Early Childhood Education
(36 credit hours)

The MAT in early childhood education is designed to develop professional expertise leading to initial certification for grades PK-3.  This program is especially constructed for candidates without practical experiences in teaching.  The course of study enables the candidate to acquire skills in instructional strategies, early intervention, knowledge of curriculum development, and early childhood program administration.

Master of Education (MEd) in Early Childhood

(36 credit hours)

The MEd in early childhood education is designed for candidates who possess an undergraduate degree and certification in Early Childhood Education or related areas of education including early childhood administration, curriculum development, or special education.

Master of Arts (MA) in Early Childhood Education
(36 credit hours)

The MA in early childhood education is designed for candidates who already possess an undergraduate degree in early childhood education or a related field and are certified in early childhood education.  Its goal is to provide candidates with higher level academic preparation in the field including research experience.  Program participants are prepared to be early childhood research and policy experts, early childhood specialists, or early childhood administrators.  In addition, this degree may serve as a prerequisite for a PhD program.

Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS) in Early Childhood Education
(30 credit hours--minimum)

The CAGS Program in early childhood education provides training in four broad areas of study:  early childhood theory, administration and supervision of early childhood programs, curriculum development and teaching methodology, and early intervention for at risk/special needs students.  The applicant must have a master's degree from an accredited institution and at least 2 years of experience in early childhood education.


Elementary Education

Master of Education (MEd) in Elementary Education
(5-year program, 164 credit hours)

The undergraduate candidate for the baccalaureate degree (128 credit hours) with 36 credits in English, history, mathematics, or Afro-American studies is eligible for the MEd in the 5-year program in elementary education.  Successful adherence to the 5-year program scheme is necessary for admittance. Formal application and admission to the graduate school is required in order to complete the 5th year.

The MEd in elementary education is designed to develop professional expertise leading to initial certification for grades (1-6). This program is especially constructed for students without previous practical experiences in teaching.  The program enables the student to acquire skills in instructional strategies, knowledge of curriculum development, assessment, and research design.

 

Secondary Education

Undergraduate Secondary Professional Minor
(30 credit hours)

The Undergraduate Secondary Professional Minor provides teacher certification for grades 7-12. Only students enrolled in the following majors are eligible to follow this certification sequence: English, history, mathematics, physical education, science, foreign language, theater arts, and music.  Students are required to maintain a 2.3 cumulative GPA and a 2.5 GPA in their major and education courses.  Only education courses with a grade of "C" or better will be accepted.

Master of Arts (MAT) in Teaching in Secondary Education (36 credit hours)

The MAT in secondary education provides training and is designed to develop professional expertise leading to initial certification for grades 7-12 for the student without previous or practical experiences in teaching.

Master of Education (MEd) in Secondary Education
(36 credit hours)

The MEd in secondary education provides training and is designed to enhance professional expertise leading to a graduate degree for the candidate who has previous teaching experience in PK-12 education and initial certification. (Individuals who have practical education experience in education, but who have not achieved certification, must take and pass the Praxis I and Praxis II tests before being fully admitted, www.ets.org/praxis.)

Master of Arts (MA) in Secondary Education

(36 credit hours--minimum)

The MA in secondary educational Research and Curriculum provides training in educational research.

Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS) in Secondary Education

(30 credit hours--minimum)

The CAGS Program in secondary education provides advanced training and specialization in curriculum and instruction, education administration and policy, and human development and psychoeducational studies. 


Reading Education

Master of Arts in Teaching MAT in Reading Education
(36 credit hours)

The MAT in reading education is designed to meet the needs of candidates who are interested in the field of reading but have not previously taken teacher education courses or do not hold teacher certification.  This degree is appropriate for obtaining employment in reading clinics, literacy programs, nonprofit agencies, private practices, and curriculum development agencies.  (Depending on state requirements, the completion of additional coursework and teaching experience may be needed for full certification as a reading teacher or reading specialist.)

Master of Education (MEd) in Reading Education
(36 credit hours)

The MEd in reading education meets the needs of candidates who are certified and have at least 2 years of practical experience in teaching.  The program is designed to prepare reading teachers, reading specialists, and consultants for K-12 education.  Individuals interested in becoming curriculum developers or working in nonprofit organizations or literacy/tutoring programs in nonschool settings or private practices are also served by this degree.

Master of Art (MA) in Reading Education
(39 credit hours)

The MA in reading education is designed to meet the needs of candidates who are interested in the field of reading but do not wish to obtain reading teacher or reading specialist certification for public education.  Students with this degree typically work in nonprofit organizations, community colleges, or private practices, curriculum development organizations.  This program is also appropriate for individuals hoping to pursue an educational doctorate in reading or literacy.

(30 credit hours--minimum)

The CAGS Program in reading education is designed for individuals who already hold a master’s degree and are pursuing additional courses primarily for career advancement or professional development or as a precursor to a doctoral program.


Special Education

Master of Arts (MA) in Special Education
(36 credit hours)

The MA in special education provides specialized preparation for teachers of students who have a different rate or style of learning and require specific types of academic and social assistance.  The candidate will serve as a resource to agencies and to the families of special needs learners.  This degree program leads to certification in K-12 learning environments for learners with special needs.

Master of Education (MEd) in Special Education
(36 credit hours)

The MEd in special education provides eligible candidates with the necessary skills, knowledge, and disposition for serving students who have special learning needs.  These candidates will be certified upon program completion and will be prepared to teach, counsel, consult, collaborate, and serve as a resource to general educators, agencies, and the families of special needs learners.

Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS)
(30 credit hours)

The CAGS Program in special education provides training for the advanced preparation of special education personnel who have earned a master's degree in special education or have obtained certification/licensure. Applicants must have a minimum of 2 years of successful teaching in an accredited special education program.
