School Counseling

  • Description of Program
  • Master of Arts (MA) and Master of Education (MEd) in School Counseling
    (54 and 48 credit hours)

The non-doctoral programs in school counseling prepare students to provide for the mental health and counseling needs of individuals in grades K-12. Graduates of the school counseling master's program primarily work as counselors in elementary, middle, and high schools--although they may also select career paths as counselors in government, business, and industrial settings as well as in private practice. Since education is the vehicle in which individuals are prepared for their various life roles, specific emphasis is placed on the strengths and challenges of African-American students and other historically disenfranchised individuals and groups as they matriculate from elementary through secondary school. Using a multicultural framework, the counseling program also focuses on the unique counseling and mental health needs of individuals and families residing in urban and metropolitan communities.
