The Center for Academic Reinforcement (CAR)
Program Overview
The Center for Academic Reinforcement (CAR) has been Howard University’s timely devised strategy for identifying and rectifying academic difficulties experienced by undergraduate and graduate students who enter the institution. The purpose of CAR is to raise the level of preparation, commitment to learning, and mastery of skills necessary for students to attain academic excellence.
CAR also provides PRAXIS I preparation courses for those students interested in becoming certified teachers. Additionally, CAR delivers intervention courses for MA, MS, and PhD students who do not pass the Graduate School’s Expository Writing Examination.

Spring semester mini courses including: Critical Thinking, Essay Writing, Goal Setting & Time Management, Listening & Note Taking, Major Grammatical Errors, Mechanics in Writing, Sentence Effectiveness, Test Taking, Vocabulary Development, and Reading Strategies |
Summer Pre-College Preparation Program for high school students who have completed 10th, 11th, or 12th grade |
Pre-Orientation Program for entering Howard University freshman |
