School of Education Hosts Capitol Hill Policy Forum
The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF), the School of Education, and the Open Society Institute Campaign for Black Male Achievement are co-sponsoring, Breaking Barriers: A Brain Trust on Educational Policy Reform for School-age African-American Males on Friday, April 24, 2009, 9:00AM -1:00PM. The forum will be held in the Russell Senate Office Building (SR-325) and features School of Education, School of Social Work, and School of Law faculty along with members of Congress including Representatives Danny Davis (IL), Chaka Fattah (PA), Yvette Clark (NY), and Bobby Scott (VA). The forum will provide discussion of upcoming education legislation, most notably the education-related provisions of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

A.C.T. Now! The Student First Campaign in the School of Education
The theme of the Student First Campaign (SFC) in the Howard University School of Education is A.C.T. Now! Achievement, Communication, and Technology. The theme, selected by HUSOE student government leaders, asserts that student achievement can be accelerated through better communication networks and technology access. Join School of Education students, faculty, and administrators in a series of roundtable discussions devoted to responding to student-identified concerns. HUSOE student government leaders will lead roundtable discussions, disseminate the HUSOE ACT Now! Survey of Student Needs, and report findings from this initial dialogue to the HUSOE community. Student leaders will also present information about membership in the HUSOE-charter education honor societies and student government associations. Lunch will be served.

HUSOE Alumni as Change Agents in the Field
The Change Agents panel will highlight three HUSOE alumni--Ms. Angela Simms, the 2007 Washington Post Foundation Teacher of the Year for the states of Maryland and Virginia, and the District of Columbia; Mr. Wayne Ryan, National Principal of the Year; and, Dr. Faye Brown, a researcher at the Yale Child Study Center. Alumni will discuss their current work and strategies for success in the worlds of education practice, policy advocacy, and human service delivery. A reception for students, alumni, and faculty will follow the panel discussion.

Education is a Civil Right Symposium
The Department of Educational Administration and Policy is sponsoring a symposium entitled, "Education is a Civil Right: Implications for Schools and Schooling" on Thursday, February 12, 2009 at 5:15 p.m. in ASA 316. Featured panelists will include Professor Derek Black, Associate Professor, Howard University School of Law and Director of the Education Rights Center; Dr. Jacqueline Jordan Irvine, Visiting Scholar in Urban Education, Howard University School of Education and Mr. Quentin Lawson, Executive Director, National Alliance of Black School Educators (NABSE). The panelists will address the legislative and educational implications of the concept of education as a civil right.
Mr. John Marshall, Legislative Assistant to Congressman Bobby Rush (D- Illinois) will present President Barack Obama's Education Agenda.
All Howard University faculty, students, staff and guests are invited to attend. Refreshments will be served.

On Sunday, we will have a "Call to Chapel" at 11am in Cramton Auditorium.
On Monday, "Innovate:Change Agents", Zaccai Free of One Common Unity will present an interactive workshop on peace education.
On Tuesday, "Investigate: Competent Researchers", Jeff Smith of DC VOICE (District Community Voices Organized and Informed for Change in Education) and Howard Alum will discuss the role of community action research in education reform organizing and mobilizing.
On Wednesday, "Inspire: Educational Leaders", Sheron Colston of Randle Highlands Elementary School will share the challenges and rewards of Principalship at an urban public school. Additionally, we will have Dean Leslie Fenwick of the Howard University School of Education to share her experiences of leadership in higher education as well as knowledge demonstrated in her writings on Principalship.
On Thursday, "Introspect: Reflective Educators", Kaneia Mayo of the Center for Inspired Teaching will explore what teachers can do to encourage students' innate desire to learn.
