Welcome to the Howard University School of Social Work's webpage. Whether you are a prospective student, alumnus, or friend, I invite you to browse our pages and discover or rediscover the excitement of Social Work @ Howard.
In May 2013 we graduated a new cohort of Howard prepared social workers. They have joined the workforce and are making that Howard difference along with the thousands of alumni who proudly claim our legacy. At our annual luncheon, the class of 1963 shared their successes with the new graduates and through this exchange, they made clear the purpose and passion of a Howard degree. Fifty years later, their commitment to excellence and advocacy has not wavered.
As we begin the 2013 Fall Semester, there are many challenges that require phenomenal social workers who are dedicated to improving the quality of life for individuals, families, communities and nations. Howard University is a place that has historically accepted the responsibility to lead the way to social change. Today is no exception. We are painfully reminded of high profile social injustices as well as the private troubles faced by many who suffer in silence. At Howard, we remain dedicated to strengthening diverse families and communities.
This year we will join the nation in celebrating the 50th anniversary of the historic August 28, 1963 March on Washington. At the Howard University School of Social Work, throughout the year we will pay tribute to our social workers who were trail blazers in the struggle for civil rights. As a result of their work, many of our alumni were the first African Americans to head social welfare agencies and programs. To celebrate their accomplishments and provide a bridge for the new generation of social workers, we are hosting a lecture series titled "The Urgency of Now: Social Work and Social Justice."
