Ms. Paula H.J. Cholmondeley, L.A., B.A., 1970

Paula H. J. Cholmondeley is a living exemplar of women breaking the glass ceiling. She is Vice President and General Manager of Specialty Products for Sappi Fine Paper, a $1.6 billion unit of $5 billion Sappi Limited, the world’s largest producer of coated free sheet papers. Sappi Limited is a publicly-owned South African company, with ADR’s trading in the United States, and had revenues in 2000 of $4.7 billion. In her strategic position at Sappi, Ms. Cholmondeley handles the uncoated paper, technical and release businesses for the global, Boston, Massachusetts-based company.

Ms. Cholmondeley, a certified public accountant, pursued the intellectual enterprise with vigor and grace, earning her bachelor’s degree from Howard University and her master’s degree in accounting from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Ms. Cholmondeley has had a challenging, varied, and prolific professional career, which included serving in the White House Fellows Organization as a Special Assistant to the U.S. Trade Representative for several countries in the Far East. She started her business career as an auditor with Arthur Andersen L.L.P., and has held a number of significant positions with several prominent companies, including several managerial positions with Westinghouse Elevator Company; Chief Financial Officer and Senior Vice President for Blue Cross of Greater Philadelphia; Vice President of Business Development and Global Sourcing; and General Manager of Residential Insulation for Owens Corning.

Ms. Cholmondeley serves on the Board of the Villanova Capital Mutual Fund; Dentsply International, the largest professional dental products company in the world; the Graduate Executive Board of The Wharton School, and is a member of The Executive Leadership Council. 

Ms. Cholmondeley lives in Boston and is active in various professional and civic endeavors.
