Day Alumni Award Recipients |
Renée Higginbotham-Brooks, Esq., is a Phi Beta Kappa,
magna cum laude graduate of Howard University, receiving the
B.A. degree in 1974. She plays a significant role in
advancing the role of women and African Americans in Texas.
She was the first African American and first female chair of
the powerful three-member Texas Alcoholic Beverage
Commission. In addition to serving as a member on Howard’s
Board of Trustees, she is also an advisor to several African
American mayors including Lee Brown, Houston, Texas; Marc
Morial, New Orleans, Louisiana; and Ron Kirk former mayor of
Dallas, Texas. |

| The Honorable
William Johnson is the 64th Mayor of the City of
Rochester, New York's third largest city. He is serving his
third term, having been re-elected in November 2001 with more
than 78 percent of the votes. Under his leadership, the City
of Rochester embarked on numerous ambitious, innovative
programs to reduce housing blight, increase
opportunities for educational and economic empowerment and
foster ethnic diversity and understanding. Prior to his
election, he served for 21 years as the president and CEO of
the Urban League of Rochester. He earned his B.A. and M.A.
degrees from Howard University in 1965 and 1967,
respectively. |

| Madison F. Richardson, MD, earned the B.S. from Howard
University in 1965. He graduated with honors from the Howard
University Medical School in 1969. In his distinguished
career, he established one of the largest otolaryngology
practices in Los Angeles. Dedicated to community service, he
served on the Commission of Los Angeles of Policy Community
Relations and as chairman of the board of the Los Angeles
Urban League. He continues to run a successful
otolaryngology medical practice and operates the Voice
Institute of Beverly Hills. |

The Honorable Emmet
G. Sullivan, U.S. District Judge for the District
of Columbia, received the B.A. degree from Howard University
in 1968 and the J.D. degree from the Howard University
School of Law in 1971. He was appointed by President William
Clinton to serve as United States District Judge for the
District of Columbia in 1994. In 1991, he
was appointed by President George Bush to serve as an
Associate Judge of the District of Columbia Court of
Appeals. And in 1984, he was appointed by President Ronald
Regan as an Associate Judge for the District of Columbia.
Sullivan is the recipient of many honors including
recognition for his achievements by the District of Columbia
Public
School System. |

Edward T. Welburn Jr. is the executive director of Design,
Body-on-Frame Architectures at General Motors Design Center
in Warren, Mich. Overseeing three design studios, his team
works closely with GM Engineering to execute designs as part
of the newly-created Advanced Vehicle Development Group. He
was appointed chief designer of the Oldsmobile Exterior II
Studio in December 1989, which led to the development of
Oldsmobile’s Cutlass Supreme and Ciera. His designs have
garnered national and international recognition. His most
recent projects include a drivable fuel cell concept car
called the Hy-Wire and the Chevrolet SSR, a concept car
scheduled for production later
this year. Welburn received the B.F.A. from Howard
University in 1972. |
