Patrick T. Harker, Ph.D.

President
University of Delaware

Patrick T. Harker, Ph.D., a member since 2009, is President of the University of Delaware (UD) with concurrent appointments as professor of business administration in the Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics, and professor of civil and environmental engineering in the UD College of Engineering. He served as Dean of the Wharton School, Reliance professor of management and private enterprise, and chairman and professor of operations and information management. He earned the Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania and served as professor and chairman of the Systems Engineering Department in the School of Engineering and Applied Science.

He was named a Presidential Young Investigator by the National Science Foundation (1986) and a White House Fellow by President Bush (1991). He currently serves as a Trustee of the Goldman Sachs Trust and the Goldman Sachs Variable Insurance Trust, and is a member of the Board of Directors of Pepco Holdings, Inc., and the Huntsman Corporation. A renowned scholar, he has published five books and over 100 articles.

A top-ranked HBCU, Howard University has a critically important role in providing Black students a rigorous, nurturing education and producing this nation's next generation of leaders. Howard's core mission -- to graduate distinguished, historically aware, and compassionate students eager and able to solve problems in the U.S. and throughout the world -- is remarkably similar to the University of Delaware's. I hope my service on Howard's board helps both institutions faithfully deliver on this promise.
