Overview and Mission
Howard University Health Sciences Simulation Center
"Promoting Patient Safety through Simulation Education and Deliberate Practice"
The Howard University Health Sciences Simulation Center is a 6,000 square foot state-of-the-art simulated learning environment offering resources to advance a comprehensive simulation healthcare education program. The Center has the capacity for improvised technology, computer-based simulation, task training simulation, virtual reality simulation and manikin-based simulation. The focus of the center is to promote interprofessional education and promote patient safety through simulation education.
The mission of the Howard University Health Sciences Simulation and Clinical Skills Center (Center) is to provide an ideal learning environment to support educational curricula throughout the healthcare enterprise and to promote patient safety through simulation education. This is accomplished by developing comprehensive simulated experiential-based activities in a safe and non-threatening environment. These activities allow for instruction, practice, and assessment of fundamental and advanced clinical/technical skills with opportunities to advance interprofessional education and collaboration. The simulated activities address the following educational domains: cognitive, psychomotor, affective and team training. The Center provides a simulated environment where health sciences students, post-graduate trainees, and practicing health care professionals learn and improve their clinical skills with deliberate practice in a controlled environment prior to real-world engagement. Faculty/instructors can monitor and assess the growth and development of learners individually and as members of teams to ensure the learners achievement of curricula milestones.
The vision of the Howard University Health Sciences Simulation and Clinical Skills Center is to provide exemplary education and service to the health science enterprise's students, postgraduate trainees, faculty/instructors and practicing healthcare professionals to promote patient-centered collaborative care and to promote patient safety through simulation education and research.
