Overview
The skins challenge is a collegiate
student competition to create original user interfaces for the
Windows Media Player. The objective is to create skins that seamlessly
integrate a cultural theme with innovative media player functionality.
The competition is open to all registered students at universities
and colleges with a National Society of Black Engineers chapter.
Students do not have to be NSBE members to enter the competition.
Skins will be judged on their embrace of a theme
from culture, entertainment or education in a manner consistently
reinforced by appearance, audio effects and operation. Emphasis
is placed on the skin's utility as a media player interface and
innovation using Windows Media Player 9 or 10 series features.
Judges will be chosen to represent academia, industry and media.
Previous judges have included Tavis Smiley (PBS), Omar Wasow (Blackplanet.com)
and Steve Wildstrom (Businessweek).
Windows Media Player skin creation provides an
excellent vehicle to develop student teamwork, interdisciplinary
collaboration and object oriented technology design. Graphic Arts
students can creatively express themselves with themes, 2D and
3D images and colors. Engineering students can utilize their programming
prowess to produce exciting functionality. All students will learn
to work cooperatively to develop a quality XML based product with
valuable utility.
