Developing Howard Web Sites:

Step-by-step:

Step 1:
The first step to developing a web site should be creating a document that gives a overview of the purpose of the web site. We have created a Web Site Questionnaire that should be completed as much as possible. Completing the questionnaire will help web developers understand what your web site is for, and how it should be designed.

Step 2:
Now you should go out on the Web and find Web sites that a similar to the one you are planning to create. For example, if you are a medical department, search for other medical departments at Howard or at other Universities to get ideas for your Web site.

Step 3:
Now you should decide on your Web site's content. The easiest way is to create a simple "overview" of your Web site, like the one on the Web Site Overview Example page. This overview helps you understand what content you need for your Web site, and also helps Web site developers understand how the navigation links should be organized.

Step 4a:
Finding a Web developer is the next step, but can be a difficult one. At this time, the number of full-time Webmasters at the University is very limited. You may need to find a student worker or an outside contractor to help develop your Web site.

Step 4b:
The other option is to use a "for beginners" Web editing software called Macromedia Contribute. This software allows a existing person in your department to create and maintain the Web site. However, it only allows for a very simple Web site and cannot let you create complicated graphics or animation. To get started with Contribute, please see the next section, "Free Consultation".

Free Consultation:

The University Webmaster(s) can provide consultation and guidance in the following areas:

  • Providing assistance as you think about creating a new web site or redesigning an existing web site.
  • Help with interviews if you are hiring a web site developer for your department.
  • Reviewing your web site for any improvements or critical problems.

To get started, contact the University Webmasters using the Contact the Webmaster form or by calling Andre Mekkawi at 202-806-2982. Please note that we are only able to assist departments as time permits.

This service does not include the actual development of your Web site.
