Tutorials & Help:
Web Hosting Rules and Policies:
General Web Policy:
Web sites hosted under this service must also follow the General Web Policy.
Web Site Addresses:
Recommended Web Address:
By default, all Web site addresses start with http://www.howard.edu/. An example is http://www.howard.edu/mydept/. It is recommended that you use this format.
Note: Student organization Web sites start with http://www.howard.edu/org/. Example: http://www.howard.edu/org/campuspals/
Custom ".howard.edu" Web Addresses:
If you already have your own domain name or would like your own mydept.howard.edu domain name, please contact the webmaster.
Note: Student organizations do not qualify for "myorg.howard.edu" style domain names.
Other Web Addresses:
For domains that do not end in howard.edu (ex: www.mydept.org) you must use a 3rd party domain name registrar such as www.networksolutions.com, www.register.com or www.godaddy.com. It is the responsibility of the Web site owners to keep all information about the domain name, such as logins and passwords.
Student and outsourced Web developers:
In cases where there is a dispute/disagreement over payment for services rendered, the Howard University Webmaster(s) only communicate with the primary Howard University contact for the Web site, the primary contact's superiors, and/or the Office of General Council.
For student organizations, the Howard University Webmaster(s) only communicate with the student organization president or the Office of Student Affairs.
Site content:
The Web Publishers for a Web Site are responsible for maintaining the content of the Web site. It is the responsibility of the department who owns the Web site to notify the University Webmasters if the site is no longer needed. Any site that is not maintained or kept up to date is subject to removal from the server.
Sensitive information:
Web sites shall not ask for, store, access, display or otherwise utilize any sensitive information unless the Web pages and processes have been reviewed by the University Webmasters and the departments responsible for the information. Sensitive information includes, but is not limited to credit card numbers, Social Security Numbers (SSN), driver’s license numbers, student IDs (or its associated PIN), or employee IDs.
Any information stored must comply with federal, state and university laws and regulations.
FTP accounts and passwords:
- FTP account holders have full access to a Web site, which includes the ability to remove any or all of the Web pages for a Web site.
- Every person who has FTP access has their own FTP account. No group accounts will be created.
- FTP accounts and passwords are not connected to any ENTERPRISE or ACCSNET accounts.
- Sharing of passwords is strictly prohibited.
- The original account holder is responsible for any actions made by the account.
Bandwidth and storage usage:
A upload/download speed maximum of 250 kb/sec (256,000 bytes/sec) per FTP account is set. Additional upload or download speed must be requested and justified. This does not effect how fast a Web site is viewed by visitors.
Each Web site is given a soft quota for storage. The usage of this storage is monitored daily and Web site contacts are notified if they exceed their quota. If a Web site equals or exceeds 150% of their quota then the University Webmasters reserve the right to lock FTP accounts and/or move files off of the Web site onto another storage medium. Users and departments should not utilize the Web server for general file storage. Storing personal files is strictly prohibited. Using the Web site storage space for "file sharing" is strictly prohibited.
Content backup and retrieval:
Each department should maintain a current copy of all content locally. ISAS is not responsible for site content. Restoration of files in the case of user error is not guaranteed. Requests to restore individual files will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis.
Support team access and monitoring:
It may be necessary for the University Webmasters to examine system logs and other records to resolve system problems. The University Webmasters reserve the right to access any account's directories to investigate and/or resolve system problems. The departmental webmaster will be notified if changes are required.
In addition, the University Webmasters will cooperate with legal authorities in investigating claims of illegal activity including but not limited to illegal transfer or use of copyrighted material, postings, or other illegal activity.
