Standard Web site templates are provided to allow webmasters to quickly create or redesign sites for offocial Howard University colleges, schools, departments, offices, organizations, etc.
There are three types of template layouts provided: left column navigation, top navigation bar or both.
The Standard HU Web Template Request Form is used to request your template once you have decided which layout you would like to use.
Left Column Navigation:
This layout uses a column on the left side of the page to contain the main navigation for the Web site. This allows as many navigation links as necessary, as well as long navigation link names. However, the column reduces the amount of space possible in the body of the page.
Advantages:
- Navigation is easy to locate for a visitor.
- No limit to the number is navigation links that can placed in the column.
- Navigation text can span multiple lines.
Disadvantages:
- Reduces the amount of horziontal space available for the page body.
- Does not handle very wide images or tables (ex: spreadsheets with a lot of columns).
Examples:
Top Navigation Bar:
This layout uses a bar under the header to contain the main navigation for the Web site. This is ideal for small to medium Web sites. However, this layout limits the amount of navigation links you can have, as well as the length of the navigation link names.
Advantages:
- Supports wider page content, such as wide images or tables (ex: spreadsheets with a lot of columns).
- Better when your Web site does not have a lot of navigation.
- Good as a sub-page design.
Disadvantages:
- Navigation is not as easy to locate for a visitor.
- Only a limited amount of navigation can fit (6 to 9 links).
- Navigation cannot span multiple lines.
