Microsoft Lync

As part of Microsoft Office 365, Howard University is implementing Microsoft Lync for faculty and staff starting in Spring 2014. This initiative will provide Instant Messaging (IM) and Web Conferencing.

Lync provides a consistent, single client experience for presence, instant messaging, voice, video, and web conferencing.

Features

  • Enhanced instant messaging (IM) to connect efficiently and effectively.
  • Online presentations with screen-sharing and virtual whiteboards.
  • Real-time presence information—including photos, availability status, and location, integrated with Microsoft Outlook.
  • Voice calls through your computer to other Lync or Skype users in your organization or in other organizations that use Lync or Skype.
  • Pre-planned and on-the-fly audio, video, and web meetings with people inside and outside your organization.
  • Participation in your Lync conference calls even if they are not Office 365 or Lync Online customers.

Mac Configuration

If you are installing on a Mac computer, the configuration process is manual (on a Windows machine, the process is automatic). So, the first time you sign in to Link, you will first have to manually fill in the details by clicking on the "Advanced" link located at the bottom of the Lync sign in screen, then selecting "Manual configuration", and filling in the two fields.
