Formatting a Disk

Note:

Quick Format removes files from the disk without scanning the disk for bad sectors. Use this option only if the disk has been previously formatted and you are sure the disk is not damaged. For information about any of the options, select the option, click the question mark, and then click the option again.

You cannot format a disk:

1. If files are open on the disk
2. The contents of the disk are displayed
3. The disk is write protected.

Click Start > My Computer

 
2. 

Click on the 31/2 Floppy (A:) icon
Click File > Format

Click Start
You may give the disk a Volume label or name.

Windows will issue a warning that the format command will erase all data on the disk
If you have any doubts concerning files or data on the disk:
Click Cancel and verify the information on the disk

Note: Once the disk is formatted, data can not be recovered.

You will receive a popup message when the format is complete.
