The Women's Health Institute (WHI) at Howard University was established to develop and implement a comprehensive interdisciplinary University program that addresses the needs, issues and health of women of color . The Institute provides a conceptual framework in four areas of concentration.
|
1. Health Care
Center for Infectious Disease Management and Research (CIDMAR)
CIDMAR is a Ryan White Title III Early Intervention Services Program that is dedicated to providing culturally competent, top quality medical care. Our physicians and staff are trained to handle complex management and treatment of infectious diseases as well as coordinating specialty care services. More about CIDMAR
2. Research
The Geriatrics Post-Doctoral Research Program at Howard University–University of Wisconsin at Madison
The Geriatrics Post-Doctoral Research Program provides each trainee financial support to work on research related to the health of older women. Research examining health differences or disparities among different groups of women is encouraged. The program is supported by the National Institutes on Aging. The goal is to provide mentored research career development to clinical scientists to facilitate: competencies in biostatistics and study design; research ethics; leadership/management; presentation and teaching; scientific writing; and research excellence.
3. Education
Comprehensive AIDS Training Initiative (CATI)
The CATI Workshop Lecture Series is a collaborative program with the National Minority AIDS Education and Training Center and the DC Department of Health, HIV/AIDS Administration. The three-day lecture series is designed to provide participants with an extensive background of the various aspects impacting those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS in the District of Columbia.
Health Issues and Concerns of Women of Color Conference Series
The Health Issues and Concerns of Women of Color Conference Series provides scientific research, best practices and cutting-edge information on health and health disparities in women of colors. The series is presented bi-annually and conference proceedings are published for dissemination to local and government agencies, health care centers and community based organizations.
4. Advocacy
Be Kind to Your Heart
The Be Kind to Your Heart program provides financial assistance to women receiving care at Howard University Hospital (HUH) for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, high cholesterol, and hypertension, and for women who are at risk for these. Women in need of treatment for these diseases who are not insured or underinsured are encouraged to apply.
Routine HIV Screening Campaign
Howard University Hospital is the first hospital in the nation to implement hospital-wide routine rapid HIV screening. This effort answers the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s call for health care providers to make voluntary HIV screening a routine part of medical care for all patients. The goal of the HUH Routine HIV Screening Campaign is to decrease the number of persons who are unaware of their serostatus, and to link them to care, thus helping to reduce the spread of HIV infection in the community in which it services.
